  • Is this a result of encoding already utf8 encoded data ?

    Hi,

    I had some trouble with displaying text that contained non-English letters.
    So I changed the meta tags in the HTML and also now edit the source file
    in Notepad++ and save as encoded UTF8 no BOM

    Just to make sure, when my php script uses this source data and then saves the
    resulting file I used :
    $article = mb_convert_encoding($article , "UTF-8");

    However, when I look at the resulting file in Notepad++,
    I have noticed some strange control characters:
    This text : "is a tight-knit underground"
    is now : "tight — knit" with an EPA showing between the words.

    Also the word grandson shows as grand–son with PADSTS showing.

    Maybe these will not not show in the webpage ... but are they the result of
    encoding already utf8 encoded data ?

    Thanks.

    That seems likely - particularly if only characters with codes over 255 are the ones being affected.
