How does the [PHP tags work here Coding Forum

I was wondering how the tage here in Coding Forum work. How does it know to to make certain text a different color? Is the box I'm typing in done in Javascript or PHP or some other language?

The code gets passed through highlight_string(), which generates colorized HTML of the code.
