Well a simpler resolution would be to use PHP, JavaScript and use AJAX (Don't be scared, AJAX is just basic javascript and use of the XMLHTTP object), not that complicated really.

you can download some pre-made apps free. Just one off google - http://www.volusion.com/livechat_software.asp - or you can get some really good feature packed ones for just a few dollars a month - providesupport to a pretty decent paid solution.
