newbie trying to learn how to change text

I'm a real newbie at learning Javascripts, I mean in terms of days here. Anyway I have been reading tutorials on how to do an image swap with document."image".src and by changing that variable.

However what if I want to do a text swap. Is there a similar field that I can change to do a text swap? I have been programming for a while and I think I am pretty familiar with concepts and terms so if somebody can give me a little guidance I would greatly appreciate it.
