    Hey guys new to this...

    here is the code for some reason an href within <a> will take precendence over onclick??? please advise.

    Yes, it does. The "click" event can trigger, but the anchor will always try to get to it's intended target, unless you return false or disable the anchor in some other way like the event object's preventDefault method, or removing the href attribute, etc.
