  • using mailto safely

    Hi, i have two mailto 's on my site for story and news submissions, i really dont want to use the contact form for this and would rather use the mailto.

    I have been playing around with it to try to use the mailto in a safe way to try to keep from getting slammed by email harvesters but have not really found a good solution as of yet.

    I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on the best way to protect against email harvesters using mailto.

    thanks.

    UPDATE well while i was reading i ran accross another article on this, and it was what i was afraid of. Since this method has become unreliable for the most part due to the need for outlook default and for other reasons, i guess i am just going to need to bite the bullet here and do a form for each of these two links.

    I am not crazy, my computer had me checked but its on dialup and im still waiting for results :)
    A good way to remember objects from arrays is you shoot objects with arrows Example: $name->id; then Arrays are $name['id'];

    Me, personally, would not use mailto. I would create a contact page.

    To hide my email address, as best as I could, I have taken to writing the pages in PHP, so that the email address is only available server-side. Any file (HTML, JavaScript, etc.) that is available client side can have any email addresses harvested.

    The only other way would be to use a seperate email address for the purpose, and ensure that any submissions had a specific prefix in the subject so that your email client can filter out spam mail.

      Thanks, since i dont know how email harvesters really work and how their tech has evolved currently. How safe it is to simply remove the mailto and just have the email address listed as text on a page that is only accessed by members. How safe is that now days from harvesters?

        Any file that is available to the client is potentially available to email harvesters. Not sure about within a ZIP file though!
