  • How to link pages

    So first of all I should mention I have absolutely almost null experience with CSS or HTML, I was trying to figure out using this already built code how to structure a website using different pages and linking different tabs. I'm using Weebly to host and their CSS/HTML platform to edit, I put all of my files into one single .zip and uploaded it to Weebly, no subfolders included.

    I have included the whole code for the index page as well as provided a screenshot to see how I have it set up. What I am trying to achieve without having any success whatsoever is to reference for examples Services.html to the Services tab on the website. You can see on the left side the page in itself is uploaded, however I get a 404 error (page not found) every time I run the website. What am I missing here? Cheers.

    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

    <title>{title}</title>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <link href="styles.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    <!--[if IE]>
    <style type="text/css">
    /* place css fixes for all versions of IE in this conditional comment */
    #sidebar1 { padding-top: 30px; }
    #mainContent { zoom: 1; padding-top: 15px; }

    Just out of curiousity, why would you need to zip your files to upload them to the server? What on your remote server UNZIPS them?

    You can upload all files at once without zipping them(to most servers I've used) using an ftp program like fireftp or dreamweaver has a built in ftp.

      I would try to find out where these files reside in regards to the root folder. if you're getting a 404, it means that page at the location you are referencing isn't there.

      This could be the case of the site being structured like so:

      http://www.websitename.com/index.html
      http://www.websitename.com/pages/Contact.html

      On your jpg, the link looks like /apps/Services.html

      Check to see if you need to add /apps/ before the link

        This could very well be the case, but if the files are zipped and then uploaded, wouldn't all the files stay in a zipped folder? therefore not in a normal file/folder structure? I dont know, I could be wrong. Like I said I've never zipped files to upload to a remote server before.

          teed,

          I believe that with Weebly, it's one of the services they offer: to upload the entire zip file site and they will auto extract the files and put them on the site.

              Those .zip files always look scary. I would avoid them in the future If I were in your shoes. Good luck with the site.
