Disappearing files in Dreamweaver 8

I have been seeing html files disappearing while using Dreamweaver 8, and they do NOT show up in the recycle bin. I have been using DW for some time, but this is a new problem. I have narrowed down this behavior to files that disappear after I try to save a file in Dreamweaver. When I try to save and get a message saying "Access denied", I can no longer open the file. I have to hit F5 (refresh) in Windows and watch the file disappear before I can save the file. If I then close the DW tab without saving it, bye-bye file!

Also, I noticed my CPU usage is 100% when this happens. I isolated prevhost.exe as the most consuming process at the time. I have turned off the "Preview Pane" in Windows Vista. Maybe that will help. We'll see. Any thoughts?

I edit with notepad. heheh. I don't even know what dream weaver looks like. Why don't you search for all html files? See if they show up somewhere.

As I said, I can see the file in Windows and in Dreamweaver, I just cannot save, view, or access the file in any way ("Access denied") until I browse to it in Windows and hit F5, making it disappear, then I can save it in DW. Not being able to find the file is not the problem. I know exactly where it is and I am watching it as it disappears, because that is the process I am being forced to go through, just as I described.

Sounds like you have a deeply corrupted application there, NoahKount. I'd suggest having a snoop around some forums which centre around applications, such as Dreamweaver or maybe one dedicated to it's use. It might be a common problem that others have experienced.

Just had a thought... You're.... Not using Vista, are you? Oh yes, I just noticed... You are. Have you ever used DW 8 with XP? If so, how did it perform there? I keep hearing of people finding big problems with their applications, once they've switched to Vista. Personally, I'm scared to even go near Vista.

Using Dreamweaver on XP I had no problems. If this is a Vista problem, it would be my first. Usually I have Photoshop CS3, DW8, and several tabs in FX3 and IE8 all running at the same time when it happens. I have 1GB of RAM, so I figure maybe prevhost.exe was the overload point. I have turned off the preview pane in Vista. If it happens again I will post in here ASAP.

So you can see the file and view it working in your editing application? Or you can see the file and you can't open it? Can you view it with a browser or with notepad?

When this happens, I can see the file as I normally would in Windows and DW. The browser, when refreshed, will have a page load error. Saving the file in DW will get an "Access denied" message. I cannot launch, delete, move, or view the properties of the file in Windows (access denied), and YES, I can see it.

By the way, Dreamweaver has advanced multi-line search-and-replace tools that are customizable for page, site, or selected files. You can search by source code and by specified tag-and-attribute combinations. When you rename or move files, it can automatically update all your href and src attributes as you go, and you can program snippets of code on shortcut keys. That is why high-power developers and companies like the one I work for use it. So some of us can do without Notepad, just as you can do without Dreamweaver. I would invite you to learn to use Dreamweaver before posting another lame answer about my newly-found problem with it.

Maybe try running Dreamweaver in XP compatibility mode:

1. Navigate to \Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\ in Windows Explorer
2. Right-click on the Dreamweaver.exe file and select Properties.
3. Click the Compatibility tab.
4. Click Run This Program In Compatibility Mode For: and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the drop-down.
5. Select Run This Program As An Administrator.

Note that DW8 doesn't officially support Vista.

This is what I thought.

Noah, Dreamweaver does tend to complicate the web-building process in many, rather unecessary ways. It's not an application I would personally recommend for web design.

Can you believe this guy? he uses Dream weaver and loses files then raves about it's multi line blah blah blah.. LOL what a joke!!

Commercial software developers create complications for computers, which leads to computers causing complications for people... Then people run out of things to blame and then start causing complications for other people.

I know it sounds very useful, to have a multi-line search 'n' replace gizmo and in fact, I've used it and it's great - but when it goes wrong, you find you've forgotten how to use your brain. Dreamweaver is very good for making quick-cash porn sites in abundance. They are professionals, too but it doesn't stop them making messy, bloated tables all over the web.

And if you'd just used stylesheets in the first place and organised things intuitively, the sites would be a lot easier to edit.
