  • Hotspots in Dreamweaver validation errors

    Inserting hotspots in dreamweaver is causing validation errors using XHTML 1.0 Transitional. see here
    http://validator.w3.org/check?verbos...tores.co.uk%2F

    Here is my page code

    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
    <title>

    </title><MMString:LoadString id="insertbar/rectHotspot" />

    <style type="text/css">
    <!--
    body {
    	margin-left: 0px;
    	margin-top: 0px;
    	margin-right: 0px;
    	margin-bottom: 0px;
    }
    -->
    </style>

    <link href="css/gw.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    </head>

    <body>
    <div align="center">
    <div id="container">
      <div id="header"><img src="img/head.jpg" width="745" height="86" /></div>

      <div id="contwrap"><div id="tslice"><img src="img/topslice.jpg" width="745" height="34" /></div>
          <div id="leftnav"><img src="img/lnav.jpg" width="216" height="209" border="0" usemap="#Map" />
    <map name="Map" id="Map">
      <area shape="rectangle" coords="8,180,64,197" href="#" />
      <area shape="rectangle" coords="101,166,184,184" href="#" />
      <area shape="rectangle" coords="20,111,53,131" href="#" />
      <area shape="rectangle" coords="150,102,212,121" href="#" />
      <area shape="rectangle" coords="115,55,194,75" href="#" />
      <area shape="rectangle" coords="36,17,80,36" href="#" />
    </map>
    </div>

      <div id="content">
              <!-- MENU-LOCATION=NONE -->
              <!-- MENU-LOCATION=NONE -->
            </p>
          </div>
      <div id="footer"><img src="img/footer.jpg" width="746" height="100" /></div>
      </div>
    </div></div>
    </body>
    </html>
    Can this be prevented in any way ? Maybe by changing the document type ?

    when you validate this document, you should be given a list of all the errors and the reasons behind these errors.

    i've just validated your code and, with the exception of <MMString:LoadString id="insertbar/rectHotspot" />, most of your code is just missing 'alt' attributes, some value errors and a missing <p> tag. you can easily fix all of these by hand.

    i have no idea what '<MMString:LoadString id="insertbar/rectHotspot" />' is supposed to do, but if you can safely get rid of it, then you should have no problems.

      Thanks for the reply Lawrie. Yes I knew I had some alt attributes missing but its the <MMString:LoadString id="insertbar/rectHotspot" /> thing thats the issue. It is needed as I have an image that uses hotspots for links.

      A hotspot allows you to make certain areas of an image a link using coordinates.

      I think it has to be a docu type error. I will try some different ones..

        Sorry lawrie,
        I didnt try to remove <MMString:LoadString id="insertbar/rectHotspot" /> because I presumed it was needed as it was put there by dreamweaver.
        I tried different docu types and they just made matters worse...
        Removing <MMString:LoadString id="insertbar/rectHotspot" /> has fixed validation and has not stoped the function working.

        big tick in the happy chappy box

        Thanks again

          no problem - i'd just tested it myself and was about to let you know that i didn't see any difference; it just looks like dreamweaver inventing an arbitrary name for good old image maps
