  • Everything I Need to Know

    Hello folks,

Despite the fact I am ask some very basic questions here I do have a College Degree (1993) in Programming.

I'm wanting to build a website along the lines of Evite. Some of the basic functions are a mailing list, calendar, forums, usernames and passwords, document storage and retrieval, contacts list and many of the other funtions that evite and similar sites offer.

Now, yes I can program COBOL, C+, DBASE, HTML and a few other oldies but goodies, but what I would like to learn is how to approach this project and what languages should I begin to study.

Do you think I should use different types of code for the different functions or is there one language that will handle the whole site?

Where should I begin? I have most of it on paper and know what I want to accomplish, but have no real idea where to begin codewise.

Any thoughts and input would be much appreciated.

Depends mostly on your disposible income. If it is Little to Zero I would suggest PHP and mySQL.
Note: I do not test code. I just write it off the top of my head. There might be bugs in it! But if any thing I gave you the overall theory of what you need to accomplish. Also there are plenty of other ways to accomplish this same thing. I just gave one example of it. Other ways might be faster and more efficient.

I guess I should add that I would like this site to be a business site in the future. Although the KISS theory holds well in most cases, I don't want the site to look, feel and function amateurishly.

Since you are familiar with C++ then I would suggest PHP as the syntax very much alike. PHP syntax is very close to C++ and Java. PHP and MySQL are both free and the two most commonly found in web hosting. As for getting started you can find many ready made scripts for doing most of what you want.

A site will not act immaturly due to the server side code. It only would if you did not know how to write proper client side code...
