  • Gecko Based Blog Reader

I've been looking for a free Gecko based RSS reader to replace BlogExpress, which I'm currently using. I haven't had any luck, so I'm hoping someone out there has found what I'm after.

I take no responsibility for the above nonsense.

Well, that was far from enjoyable...
After installing NewsMonster I restarted Mozilla 1.6 to find that it bought up a warning stating that I was using a beta version which may cause problems. Then is hung itself
Ok, system re-start. Got past that screen, and it hung itself again while loading. Now I'm going to uninstall it and hope that I don't need to re-install Moz aswell.
        I think I'll try aggreg8 next

          This story just gets worse.....
So after having newsMonster disembowel and regurgitate my install of Moz 1.6b, I downloaded Moz 1.6 thinking that it was my own stupid fault for installing NewsMonster over a beta version.
I re-installed NewsMonster, and...BAM! Same thing again, it killed Mozilla entirely. Oh well, re-install mozilla and give aggreg8 a try....
It works, although doesn't fetch the description details from the .xml and requires that all feeds be categorised; no biggy.
But then, only after typing in all my fav. blogs, I find out that it is too picky to parse A List Apart's XML or the feed from Superflous Banter.
While this is theoretically a Good Thing (not parsing less than perfect XML), I can't live without ALA, so aggreg8 gets the boot.

After re-installing Moz 3 times, including downloading a newer version, I'm back where I started, but with a sour taste left in my mouth.

I take no responsibility for the above nonsense.

Well, I know that it's not Gecko-based, but Feed Demon is really good. At first I was hesitant to drop $30 on a feed reader, but I now know that every penny was worth it.

You should download the 1.0 Trial. Of course, there are tons of improvements in the upcoming v1.1, but you have to be a registered user to get that version.

I'm also working on a RSS/Atom parsing engine, written in JavaScript. It's a MozDev project, so it's focused on Gecko. There's still a ways to go, but it's got flawless support for RSS 0.9x and 2.0. I'm still working on RSS 1.0, 1.0 Modules, and Atom 0.3 though.

The only drawback about this is that I'm not developing an actual RSS Reader (yet). It's just the parsing engine, but other Gecko developers should be able to build a Gecko-based aggregator around this engine. We'll see how it all turns out.

              Thanks Skzyx,
I used to use FeedDemon when it was a free Beta, and loved it. But being a poor, unemployed student, I'm having trouble justifying $30 US on something which has so many free alternatives.

Look forward to seeing the end result of your work....

Is this the mysterious XUL project you've had for a while?
