How to create a website with user profiles?

I am a beginner who is trying to teach myself website design. I understand XHTML, CSS, & Javascript.

I am trying to teach myself how to design a website that allows users to create their own profile pages, with text & pictures.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.
