exactly. That is what Google wants us to do. And they know it isn't what people do. So when I see companies wanting to hire someone for their SEO and they only want white hat SEO, it's obvious they don't know anything about the subject.

The difference is in whether you get caught doing something against search engine arbitrary guidelines. It's their guidelines, you can abide or not. Black hat is not unlawful.

Most of the time, getting links by people recommending you is the easiest way, but of course you need to find an effective bait first.

It works. Of course you need to first get the word out about that content. The phone or even email is much more powerful to reach opinion makers than linking. Linking happens afterwards.

You want to get at least some original content on your website, maybe get articles linking to your site and do some backlinking. There may be some companies that will do some backlinking to your site for a fair price.

One way to analyze the difference is trying to think from user prespective. Would you as a user wanted to read spun articles, liked hidden pop-ups or going in loops of sites to find relevant content, answer is no. So there are black hat. I think I gave a line of thinking to analyze the difference in method between the two.

I'm not sure what hidden pop-ups has to do with blackhat seo. They're simply an annoying list-building technique.
