Who invented copy, cut, and paste. Whoever it was is a genious He should get some kind of productivity award. I love that person. Does anyone know who it was?

the definition of a computer?

I kinda think this was something that wasnt invented so much as it was required or implied.

Computers exist off of the principle that work can be duplicated and reused in an automated fashion.

Probably the guys at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) circa 1975. They invented it all: window GUI w/ mouse, ethernet, et.al. However the morons at Xerox corporate HQ had no clue about what they had. Learn more about it at your library; read Dealers of Lightining.

Yeah lots of stuff we take for granted was developed there. Most of the researchers got fustrated with Xerox HQ ignoring them; so they quit and started their own companies.

Like the guy who invented Ethernet and founded 3Com is an ex-Xerox PARC researcher.

Steve Jobs got a peek at the GUI once when he was invited for a tour. Then he realized the potential and asked for his entire programming staff to recieve a demo. The person that did the presentation told Xerox HQ they were "giving away the kitchen sink" and they did.

Then Apple attempted their own GUI machine code-name "Lisa" which turned out an expensive flop. Then the Mac came.... and the war began... \

Try reading this book, "Accidental Empires: How the Boys of Silicon Valley Make Their Millions, Battle Foreign Competition, and Still Can't Get a Date" I've seen the video version too.

cut and paste is even better when you set the two side buttons on your mouse to copy/cut and paste. Then it's really nice.

Oracle Guy: Did you ever see the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley"? They showed the whole process of how modern computers started. It also showed how Bill Gates founded Microsoft. I severely recommend that movie to anybody that's interested. It provided me a lot of background knowledge about Microsoft, Apple, IBM, etc. The IBM company didn't want part of Microsoft because they didn't believe something called a "mouse" would become popular. Also, IBM almost bought the first DOS system by Microsoft, but Bill Gates wanted to license it to them. Just some info I got from the movie Excellent discussion!

Oh and "cut'n'paste" has been around for way longer than computers as we know them, since suitably thin parchment came about one would expect.

Thanks for the info, I am going to check these books and movies. Sorry about it not being a perfect subject for programming forum but I thought that most programmers appriciate the fast that they do not have to type every little thing that they already have on a million other pages. Have fun guys

I tend to find myself wanting to copy more than one thing at a time and paste them i need them...

Any ideas of how one could acheive this task?

Yep I agree, excellent discussion.

"Pirates of Silicon Valley" was very interesting, if I remmember correctly, Steve (not Jobs, Bill Gate's co-founder... eerrmmmm.. OH well) bought DOS for $100,000 from some guy who thought he had just made the best deal in the histroy of the world. He was right - however it was the best deal for Bill Gate's et al - not him.

If the movie was accurate, Xerox realy did give away GUi and the mouse to Apple. (Wasn't Lisa named after Steve Jobs first daughter??)

Another good read is..

"Pride Before the Fall" by John Heilemann.

The author discribes the book as "The humbiling of Bil Gates..."

It is the story (account) of the trial of Microsoft vs US Government over Microsofts strong arm tactics concerning the "forcing" of OEM's to includ IE free, and not allowing them to include NS with ANY MS software.

Very interesting read which includes how the Department of Justice ended up ordering Microsoft to split IE from the windows package and only offer it as an option, and MS were to allow OEM's to include NS if they want when shipping PC's with Windows. YEAH RIGHT... and that is happening.
